Superhero Movies on Steroids Series: Movie #63

Ultimate Avengers (2006, animated)

Plot: Nick Fury (Andre Ware), the leader of SHIELD, assembles a super team for the Avengers project led by Captain America (Justin Gross), an enhanced soldier who was frozen underwater during World War II.  The Avengers must stop a dangerous alien race that was in alliance with the Nazis back in Captain America’s time.

This is a solid introduction to the world of the Avengers.  There are a lot of characters to introduce, but they pretty much dive right into it.  We get good back stories on most of these heroes, but it seems to have an especially good focus on CaptainAmericaand Bruce Banner.  Captain America is definitely the most interesting and fleshed out.  I also enjoyed Giant Man who was pretty funny, but also kind of a dick.  The animation looks really nice, especially early on when they are introducing CaptainAmerica.  I don’t really like the plot however.  Stop an alien race that used to work with the Nazis…eh.  But to the film’s credits, it shifts gears into a better storyline towards the end that was far more interesting.  They also did a good job with the Hulk’s voice.  It’s so easy to make that silly, but it was convincing here.  If you’re a big Marvel fan, this is a solid movie for you.

Rating: 7 out of 10 (Good)

Category Rankings (Spoilers Throughout):

Best Performance: Justin Gross as Steve Rogers/Captain America
-He brought the leadership and likability to the voice that you need for CaptainAmerica.  And the movie really is about him and dealing with his pain of being frozen for 60 years.

Worst Performance: Michael Massee as Bruce Banner
-While I enjoyed the Hulk’s voice (Fred Tatasciore), Banner’s was overly squirmy and awkward.

Best Line: “Did we win?” –Captain America asking Nick Fury if they won World War II
-This sums up the character perfectly.  The guy’s been frozen for 60 years and this is the first thing he asks.  Awesome.

Worst Line: “You’re lucky.  I had an opening in my schedule.” –Iron Man making a surprise appearance to help the Avengers
-Tony Stark/Iron Man is supposed to have all these witty one-liners.  I feel like this could have been better.

Best Fight:
-All the Avengers going up against Hulk, but specifically Thor and Hulk battling it out was the highlight for me.  Maybe this is just a personal thing from someone who knows nothing about Hulk, but is he really that powerful?  All the Avengers can barely stop him?  Whatever.

WTF Moment:
-The Hulk was able to pick up Thor’s hammer!  I have major problems with that after watching the recent Thor movie.  WTF!

Best Scene:
-It’s the first scene where Captain America’s troop are about to storm a Nazi base in World War II.  The animation really shines here.

Worst Scene:
-After the Avengers fail their first mission, Nick Fury is a complete dick to Captain America.  It wasn’t his fault!  Maybe I could have accepted this more if Samuel L. Jackson were doing the voice.

Funniest Moment:
-Giant Man spells out ‘SHIELD sucks’ with his ants.  That’s pretty funny.

Bad Ass Moment:
-Iron Man is flying through this base and just taking out guns left and right.
